The Journey
Kathmandu
"The Valley" is a country in itself. As well as visiting well known landmarks at the best times, we will shoot at a host of unknown locations that represent the true face of the Valley and its people. This will include both the old city and the new, which is just as fascinating, if not more than the old. Therefore we will photograph Newaris, Kathmandu's original inhabitants, who famously have a different festival every day, and also the inhabitants who have moved from the rural districts and the mountains, many of whom came to KTM during the maoist insurgency during the late 90s and early 00s.
Pokhara
Most tourists never go beyond Pokhara's "Lakeside", the tourist hub of Central Nepal, except maybe to climb Sarankot. While we will stay on Lakeside, we will visit the authentic Pokhara and find out what makes this city tick.
Annapurna Region
We will visit, and stay at, villages way off the tourist trail and meet local people of the Gurung caste, one of the main groups making up the Gurkhas. All villages can be reached by jeep (nowadays) although there will be an option for a hike if anyone wants.
About the Workshops
The Focus
The focus of the workshop is to develop and enhance your photography skillset. Spending time in each location allows us to really explore and develop individual imagery and short projects. I am much more than just a guide!
The Tutorials
Tutorials throughout the workshop will teach either a practical technique, including Lightroom, or an approach to the subject matter at hand. All supported by imagery from ambitious and successful contemporary and past photographers.
The Shoots
Shooting is generally at dawn and dusk for the best light. Daytime is to recce our locations, tutorials, photo reviews, independent sightseeing, and.. resting! At locations, I will be at hand to discuss approaches to subject matter as well as provide technical assistance.
Your Goals
Email James directly to discuss how this experience can help develop your creative goals. Everyone gets personal attention throughout each workshop to maximise your photographic growth.
Orientation and Flights
International flights go in and out of Kathmandu. After spending time there we will take an internal, half hour flight to Pokhara, after which travel outside Pokhara will be by jeep. Aftet visiting the villages we go by Jeep back to Pokhara and then fly to Kathmandu.
