Gurkha Photography Workshop

Ever wanted to meet and photograph retired Gurkhas and their families? Here's your opportunity in this day long workshop in Aldershot, UK, the town to which many such soldiers from Nepal have retired over the last twenty years.

This workshop runs over one day and is in two parts. In the morning we visit the town centre to photograph these extraordinary humans as they go about their days. James knows the best places to meet them. Then, we visit the Gumba (monastery) built be the community in Aldershot. We have a home cooked lunch there and then are shown around the Gumba and given the opportunity to photograph the Buddhist monks and interior.

As ever, James, winner of the Sony World Photo Portfolio Prize in 2023,  will be on hand with technical guidance, or brainstorming about approaches to the shoot.

Cost is £150 per person. Please get in touch to discuss a date as this workshop is on demand.

Price includes all tuition, the workshop PDF and post-shoots review.

About the Workshops

The Focus

The focus of the workshop is to develop and enhance your photography skillset. Spending time in each location allows us to really explore and develop individual imagery and short projects. I am much more than just a guide!

The Tutorials

Tutorials throughout the workshop will teach either a practical technique, or an approach to the subject matter at hand. All supported by imagery from ambitious and successful contemporary and past photographers.

The Shoots

Shooting is generally at dawn and dusk for the best light. Daytime is to recce our locations, tutorials, and photo reviews! At locations, I will be at hand to discuss approaches to subject matter as well as provide technical assistance.

Your Goals

Email James directly to discuss how this experience can help develop your creative goals. Everyone gets personal attention throughout each workshop to maximise your photographic growth.

Orientation

Aldershot is in Hampshire, about half an hour drive from the M25. As well as easy off street parking, there is also a train station in the town centre, which is a ten minute walk from the Gumba. In short, everything is close together.

The workshop normally starts around 10.30 and finishes at around 3pm.
